Jon's Basic Rules of Tailoring
1. When investing in bespoke clothing, keep it classic, as classic rarely goes out of style.
2. A plain navy and a plain grey bespoke suit will form a solid base for any man’s wardrobe. For all season wear, opt for a mid-weight cloth of around 11oz. Add a city tweed to mix it up for casual Fridays and weekends.
3. I always favour slanted pockets on a jacket as they highlight the waist. They give the appearance of more shape, which is more flattering.
4. English cloths are the best, particularly those woven in Huddersfield, getting their superior handle and finish via the soft Penine water used in the cloth finishing process - making them the envy of the cloth making world!
5. If your budget allows, always go for a bespoke suit which will give you intermediary fittings. This means you'll be more involved in the fitting process and able to guide me as to your personal preferences.
6. Avoid dry cleaning your suits, if you can. The dry cleaning process strips the wool of its natural oils, giving rise to an unnatural shine, and reducing the natural life of the cloth. Opt instead for a sponge steam and press, as well as spot cleaning for any marks or stains.
7. Brush your suits after each wear. This helps keep the cloth free of dust and dirt. Store on shaped wooden hangers and don’t over stuff your wardrobe.
8. Never rush your tailor! Be patient with the making process - bespoke takes time.
